Camponotus vicinus ||Live Queen|| [Bicolored Carpenter Ant] (Red Morph)
A two-coloured ant (red and black) scurries across the hot desert floor of the Okanagan desert. It soon discovers a rock to seek cover from the scorching hot sun. One... two... three more queens also had the same idea. All of which were a darker colour compared to the original queen. Though, something was off. They weren't showing any aggression toward each other... instead, they welcomed her with liquid sugars straight from their social stomach (via trophallaxis).
Camponotus vicinus, one of Canada's only polygynous multicoloured carpenter ant species! (can have more than one queen in a colony)Â
Care Guide:
Despite their hardy nature, it is still important to provide proper care for an optimal growing season.Â
Food
Camponotus vicinus will eat anything they get their hands on. From insects (beetle larvae, fruit flies, or roaches) to meat (ham, turkey bacon, or chicken) and carbohydrates like Honey, sugar water, or nectar.Â
Temperature and Humidity:
The temperature should be kept from 18-29C and humidity between 50-70%, medium humidity as Camponotus vicinus is a soil-loving species.
Ant nest:
Camponotus vicinus will do great in any of our setups. When choosing the size of the nest, the colony should take up at least 40%+ of the nest capacity to insure the colony doesn't feel vulnerable and stressed.Â
These ants would do well in any of the Esthetic Ant nests on our website.
Hibernation:
Yes, has to be hibernated in a cool area at 1-10°C for 3-4 months (usually from the start of November-February)
